COLD8, a novel major QTL gene encoding a chloroplast triacylglycerol lipase, negatively regulates rice chilling tolerance. OsbZIP23 binds to the ABRE in the COLD8 promoter to regulate its expression. The cold8 mutations increase unsaturated fatty acids (16:1 and 18:3), thereby reducing chilling sensitivity.
